During 2010 scams over the internet and telephone more than doubled from 2009. Would you take up an offer made to you over the telephone i.e a fabulously cheap telephone deal? A property for sale? Sound too good to be true?It usually is. When would you provide personal details on the internet or telephone? What would you do if you thought some one sounded particularly dodgy? What is you were a victim of a scam, who would you turn to?

Obviously,Putting up credit card details on the internet is very dangerous, unless it is a trusted site (Ebay)
It is also dangerous to put Credit card details over the telephone unless you really know who your talking to.
People should be very careful and should regularly check their money after giving their detail

Like its already been said, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you're offered a 500GB internet plan for $20/month, and you're paying $40/month for 100GB, whats the chance of it being a scam???
Very Good.

I always ask for a business card, contact number and mailing address from the seller. You can't be too careful in handing out your details over the net and the phone.

ACCC, they deal with things like this all the time, they are who you would turn too.

Personally, i don't buy off the net.
-Too time consuming
-Shipping costs
I'd rather pay an extra $10 and have it now than wait 3 months for it cheaper.

Be aware of what your doing, the internet can be a dangerous place.

My two cents
peace

to be honest it doesnt suprise me that internet fraud has gone up; as technology upgrades, so will the scams.

There is a common saying "if it sounds to good to be true it probably is," but the problem is, if something sounds really good, we automatically want to snap it up be4 some1 else takes it we dont stop and think.

I would like to think im not that negligent

I always try never to give out personal details and stuff over the phone knowing there are idiots out there who will try and steal from me. I dont even like using my bank card, because of certain scams and stuff.

I do buy off the internet though, but only from secure websites

I suppose i would go to the ACCC but im skeptical they would be able to do much to help lol

I wouldn't give any information about myself over the internet or telephone to a person who just came from out of nowhere and just randomly asked me without myself knowing who he/she is or what I'm getting myself into or what i would be buying, if I thought that the person who was doing this sounded dodgy i would look the person up on the internet and see what it says and if I see that he is a dodgy person i would report him to the police and lastly if I feel victim to one of these types of people i would turn to the cops and turn him/her in.

Well if you think that you have bought something that is very cheap online but very expensive in stores well you would think to yourself that something that something is not right, so i would keep trying to find out more information, then i would go to the fedral police or something to report them.

when a telemarketer phones our house dad usually takes the call, although he usually hangs up on them he has heard them out a few times but never taken the offer. i would never purchase a property online especially with out ringing a salesperson.
i would never share my details to someone who has rang me but i would give my details to some sites (ebay) over the internet.
if i did become a victim i would turn to the ACC wich seem to be people who deal with this all the time

I cannot believe some people actually believe the scams they are hooked in to. If it sounds dodgy it probably is. I wouldn't give out my personal details over the phone or on the internet, unless it is a trusted website. If it's one of those pop-up ads about like how to get a flat stomach in five days by buying a certain product, i wouldn't give out my personal details.

I would turn to the ACCC for help in scams.

To tell the truth, if someone tried to sell me a cheap telephone deal, I wouldn't be interested and hang up on them.

42,000 people getting scammed is too much. Anyone been scammed in this class?

Obviously it is common knowledge that you don't give your actual personal details online or over the phone. But what I'm worried about is maybe we are sending information about ourselves online without even releasing it for example facebook. Although facebook is awesome the more we share on it the more information about us builds up. Sure you can delete some things but I'm sure there is probably a way of retrieving it. people really need to think about who they add and what information do you want everyone to see. I know it seems far fetched but it's not that impossible. Also most of the scams like congratulations you are the 1000000000 visitor you win a prize is totally obvious but I'm worried about not being able to recognise something is a scam before it's too late at the rate new scams are going i don't know..... what's going to happen.

I would never give my personal details to anyone over the phone or on the internet, unless i actually knew and trusted the person or it was a very popular, trusted site. i cant believe that some people actually believe these people are telling you the truth and not trying to rip you off. if i became a victim of this i would contact the ACCC for help.

Giving someone else my details over the phone is something i would never do , firstly you never know who could be on the other end of the line. But i also wouldn't give my details over the internet , my parents won't even let my use Ebay :P

Its really bad to think that people don't actually care who they rip off and scam from.

If i thought that someone sounded dodgey or said something that didn't feel right i would instead of giving my details over the phone and risking it for say a bank i would go the bank and sought it out were i knew i was dealing with real people. With new technology it is now easier to be a victim to this scaming.

Contact ACCC

When my family gets a call from telemarketers it is usually when we are having dinner so we tend not to answer it as we have a feeling it could be someone trying to sell something to us or give us an offer. If we do answer the phone it is mainly my dad that talks and he is never on the phone longer than 3 minutes with them.

Personally, i would never give details over the phone to someone who calls me. However, some shops let you buy things over the phone, so in that case i would.
When it comes to giving details over the internet, i trust this more than over the phone. As long as the sight is official and i know that not much can go wrong i would give personal details. Example, I gave out personal details to buy Usher tickets.

If someone sounded dodgy, i'd probably say no thank you nicely and have no hesitation in hanging up the phone.

I would defiantly turn to the ACCC for help.

- Never as offers over the phone usually sound dodgy.
Sound too good to be true?It usually is. When would you provide personal details on the internet or telephone?
-i would not provide personal details over the phone however i would over the internet.
What would you do if you thought some one sounded particularly dodgy?
-just hang up: there's no point in wasting your time.

What is you were a victim of a scam, who would you turn to?
- the ACCC

If a deal over the phone or internet is made available to me that seems too good to be true i would defiantly not take up the offer because i 99.99999 percent likely to be something dodgy, if it sounded particularly dodgy i would report it to somewhere so consumers that do not pick up that it is a scam will not be affected.
I would only provide my personal details over the phone or internet if i was 100 percent sure that it was a secure, reputable buisness.
if i was a victim of scam i would turn to the ACCC :)

Some people give all their details over the internet when they get messages such as : the prince of india wants to give you all his money but you need to give us $1000 dollars to send it. Never trust anything unless you've done an investigation on it. Never give your details over the phone unless you have called up the people and you know they're trusted.

I completely agree with most of these comments, especially towards consulting the ACCC about help with scammers. though as Arnold said i would also be skeptical whether they would be able to help at all.

And i actually don't mind giving out my details over the net as long as i know I'm protected and am on secure websites

My grandmother uses eBay and so far she has not had any problems receiving priced objects, though they have been dodgy the people she is buying of have pulled through.

My dad now had gotten a pay-pal account and is buying 8 pairs of shoes from overseas and I'm beginning to wonder whether or not its legit.

I agree with most comments also>i would only give my details to trusted sites e.g eBay or Amazon. It also matters if the person you are buying off is trusted.

Over the phone>definitely NO--Anyone could be on the other end of that line and your details can be saved and then used for EVIL Lolz
